YOUNG people in Barrow are being invited to get involved with a new community project.

Suzanne Wilson from the The University of Central Lancashire in Preston is looking for people to join in the ‘Ormsgill Stronger Together’ over the summer holidays.

The aim of the project is to help encourage social inclusion and community engagement within the area.

Organisers are looking to recruit and train children as community researchers to conduct neighbourhood social network analysis.

The research findings will then be returned to UCLan and studied in order to spot trends and identify social issues which are particularly significant in the area.

This data will be used in collaboration with Cumbria Constabulary to put together a plan of action to tackle these issues.

Suzanne Wilson said: “The project is part of our Connected Communities Approach.

“We want to work with communities to do their own research and link them up with key partners to help the community.

“We’ve done this kind of project in various areas including the North East and in Whitehaven in the North West.

“Now I want to work in partnership with Cumbria Constabulary.

“I really want to champion young people, give them an opportunity to explore their communities and empower them.

“I also want to really show some the community that there are young people out there who want to get involved as I feel young people are sometimes demonised.”

Ormsgill councillor Bill McEwan said: “It’s a great way to find out ideas from the community about how to make things better for everyone.

“I think it’s important for young people to be involved as they are the future. The training is on August 1 at the children's centre and I would encourage young people to come down.”
