ULVERSTON was full of festival feeling this weekend with Furness Tradition Folk Festival.

The town was full of folk music and dancing across the weekend, with a host of bands, singers and dancers performing for residents at various venues as the festival celebrated its 21st year.

On Friday evening there was a gathering at Coronation Hall where residents enjoyed a night of dancing and music courtesy of the Furness Tradition Community Band.

Then on Saturday there was a host of acts at the Coronation Hall as well as at the Market Cross.

There were performances from Kate Doherty and the Navigators, Benedicts Morris, Raving Rock and Cuttery Coo as well as many others across the day.

On Sunday the sounds of morris dancing could be heard across town with performers entertaining shoppers at the Market Cross.

Les Ord, secretary for Furness Traditions, said: “The festival has been really good.

“There’s been lot’s of people out in the streets watching the performances and we’ve had a great turnout overall.

“All of the events have been really well attended.”

Looking back at the last 21 years of celebrating folk music and dance, Mr Ord said: “We’ve had so much support over the years and the festival has grown. “We’ve always tried to bring young performers to the festival and look for people trying to break in to the music scene.

“It’s important for us to celebrate folk music as it is an important part of our heritage.

“We like to promote Cumbrian tunes but also introduce people to music from elsewhere.”

We asked about the plans for the festival going forward, he said: “We just want to keep getting better.

“We like having it in Ulverston.

“We enjoy having the intimate setting so wouldn’t want it to be a festival in a field.

“But we’re looking at getting more community involvement.

“We’re already supported by the local council and we’d like more businesses and organisations to be involved.”
