THIS week’s Trader of the Week award goes to eco-friendly business Pastures New Healthfoods.

The family-run company has been established since April 1984, and is known as a forerunner in the vegetarian food trade.

Opened by Richard and Jill Holmes, 70, 35 years ago, Pastures New started life out as a whole-food veggie cafe on Scott Street.

After kicking the ground running, the cafe would soon extend its reach into another store next door.

Shop founders’ daughter, Lucy Holmes, 40, said: “We’re delighted to have even been recognised, so to win is great.

“Working as a family, we’re very proud to provide Barrow’s public with unique healthy products.

“Ever since my parents started this business, we’ve always strived to provide health foods, which aren’t necessarily available anywhere else.

“As well as a diet approach, we encompass ethical living and promote Barrow’s war on plastic.”

Regular customer, Stephanie Haslam said: “I would like to nominate Pastures New Healthfoods as Trader of the Week as the store has such a vast selection of ethical, eco-friendly products that nowhere else in Barrow is providing.

“Also the store has such a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere and the staff are really informative and friendly.

“It’s nice to see that at least one place in Barrow is providing alternative products for the conscious consumer.”

Ms Holmes’ sister Anna Myerscough, 37, who also helps run the shop, said: “We’ve a loyal customer base, who have been shopping with us from the beginning.

“Customers always tell us of their fond memories of Dad, who sadly died (aged 66) in 2013, but his legacy lives on.”

The long-established store provides a warm, welcoming, friendly and safe atmosphere, which is coupled with staff members who listen to customers health concerns.

Mrs Myerscough said: “Our knowledgeable, well-trained staff who are keen to help and advise on health matters.”

Pastures New has a whole host of best sellers including CBD oils, used for pain relief, and L-theanine to help with stress and anxiety.

Going forward, the store is set to provide refill stations, where customers can fill using reuseable bottles.
