AN exciting family-fun day celebrating the area’s seabird spectacle is set to take place at RSPB Hodbarrow Nature Reserve in Millom this Sunday - starting from 11am.
During the spring and early summer, Hodbarrow is home to an impressive number of rare nesting Sandwich terns along with smaller numbers of little and common terns too.
The elegant seabirds which come to the UK to breed after wintering in Europe and Africa, have sadly suffered large declines in numbers in recent years, due to a lack of food availability for their chicks, a loss of the coastal sites they need to nest in, and disturbance by human activity.
RSPB Hodbarrow is a Cumbrian stronghold.
Hodbarrow RSPB warden Mairi Maclauchlan said: “We’ve had an amazing tern breeding season and we want to tell everyone.”
