THE Coastguard has issued a warning for people to be more prepared when taking boats on the water.

It came as volunteers from Furness Coastguard were called out at 10.40pm on Sunday to reports of a person adrift in a boat in Walney channel.

Barrow Lifeboat launched to assist in the search, while Coastguard search teams took up vantage points.

Barrow Lifeboat located the vessel and towed it to safety.

"The person on the boat did not have a life jacket, flares, a radio or mobile phone," said a spokesman. "This was a positive outcome to what could have very easily been a more serious incident.

"We urge everyone to check their boats before they head out and check their safety equipment is serviceable, radios are in working order, life jackets are worn or easily to hand, distress flares are carried and in date and your mobile phone is charged."
