A MILITARY bomb disposal unit was called to carry out a controlled explosion after more than 100 items of ordnance washed up on the beach.

The callout on Wednesday came after the discovery of the find by a Fisheries Officer on the beach north of Millom.

Millom Coastguard's station manager John Whitford said: "On arrival on scene the team confirmed the item as ordnance, and Bomb Disposal contacted.

"When the Royal Logistics Corps EOD Team from Catterick Garrison attended it was decided that a full clearance was required. To this end the team deployed the following day to assist the EOD team.

"The final total was in excess of 100 items, not all of which were live. The live ones were blown up on site; the others taken away for disposal."
