Barrow and Furness MP John Hutton resigned from his position as Defence Secretary and said he would not be contesting his seat at the next election. He had been the Labour MP for Furness since 1992.

A terraced house at Railway Terrace, Lindal, was offered for sale at £37,950. A semi-detached house at Devonshire Road, Ulverston, was £40,000.

50 YEARS AGO

A Suzuki K11P with an 80cc engine was £140 from Eddie Crooks, the motorcycle dealer, at Crellin Street, Barrow. Insurance for a year cost £4 and road tax was £2.50.

Two RSPCA officials based in Furness were called to West Cumbria to give emergency assistance in dealing with hundreds of oiled birds found between Seascale and Ravenglass.

Four MPs formed the Tribune Brains Trust at a public debate held by Barrow and Dalton Labour Party in the Co-op Central Hall on Abbey Road, Barrow.
