THERE is a big push under way at the moment to breathe new life into Barrow town centre.

Work is taking place to try and make a positive difference, from new events to regular street sweeps.

Nothing should get in the way of this work because the high street needs all the support it can get.

Next month’s Soapbox Challenge is a massive coup for the town and its organisers Barrow BID.

In his haste to ensure nothing nobbles this spectacular, councillor Sol Wielkopolski makes a valid, if forceful point.

Local authorities do need to be seen to be working with, rather than against, new events such as these.

Only last week, Barrow Police lodged an entirely legitimate objection about how late alcohol might be sold at the event.

As much as we all want the event to happen, we also have to respect that the authorities face enormous legal responsibilities concerning public safety

We may not agree, but it’s the world live in. News that some stallholders are being quoted nearly £200 is disappointing.

Whatever can be done to address these issues and improve relationships should be explored.

There is a real desire at the moment for Barrow to raise its profile, so it would be a pity if this fresh enthusiasm is discouraged.

It’s far better the private and public sector works in a spirit of co-operation, because ultimately Barrow benefits in the long run.
