A DOCTOR was called away from afternoon surgery after a female biker suffered serious injuries in a road traffic collision.

Dr Steven McQuillan, a GP at Norwood Medical Centre, on Abbey Road, Barrow ran to help the 27-year-old woman after she fell from her bike in Stafford Street.

The biker, who was from Barrow, collided with an Audi A6 and was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Police said she was taken to Royal Preston Hospital and her injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

It is understood she suffered a fractured leg and collar bone.

A bystander, who lives on Warwick Street, witnessed the accident. She said: “I was standing outside and saw a biker heading down Warwick Street. Next thing, there was a crash at the cross junction.

“The collision caused a really loud bang.

“It shocked me and I was very worried for the biker, who looked as though she was in pain.

“I rang the police straight away.

“Dr McQuillan arrived to immediately help the driver and the biker, which was great to see.”

Two ambulances, along with multiple police vehicles, were in attendance during the incident, while the air ambulance landed in Barrow Park. A police cordon saw four roads around the Stafford Street and Settle Street crossroad closed for several hours for investigations.
