CONCERNS about Kavinder Madhra were first aired in public in November when his former colleague Peter Duffy spoke out about his time with the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT).

Respected consultant urologist Mr Duffy quit his job at Furness General Hospital in July 2016 amid concerns patients were being put at risk.

He had flagged up concerns about three of his urology department colleagues; one of which was Mr Madhra.

The two had both started working at the trust at the same time and as a newly-qualified consultant Mr Duffy was delighted when he got the job and began his employment in Barrow.

“Furness General proved a warm, welcoming and a thoroughly pleasant place to work but it didn’t take much time at all for me to develop some reservations about a new colleague, Mr Madhra,” Mr Duffy told The Mail.

“My concerns over clinical standards didn’t go away and I had a number of conversations with senior medical staff between the years of 2001 and 2005-6.

“These concerns all related to Mr Madhra.”

Mr Duffy went on to make 26 complaints about incidents within the urology department between 2014 and 2016 involving Mr Madhra and two other colleagues.

An employment tribunal in August 2018 ruled Mr Duffy had been unfairly dismissed and he was awarded £102,000 although the judge did not find he was dismissed or ill-treated as a result of his whistleblowing.

Now, Mr Duffy has been called by Mr Madhra to give evidence at his fitness to practice hearing being conducted by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) this month.

Mr Madhra, who is representing himself during the hearing, has requested Mr Duffy’s attendance so he can cross-examine his former colleague.

Mr Duffy raised a number of concerns to the General Medical Council which form part of their case against Mr Madhra.

Mr Duffy has already provided evidence to the panel during an interview as have a number of other clinicians.

If the MPTS panel decide Mr Madhra’s fitness to practice is impaired they can ban him from working as a doctor.
