A BARROW school is open after closing yesterday due to the building’s ceiling falling through causing flooding.

South Walney Junior School’s main entrance ceiling fell through due to a a water heating failure, causing the ceiling to fall through and secondary flood damage.

Yesterday morning the school reassured parents it will reopen its doors today with children expected to start classes before 9am.

A spokesperson from Cumbria County Council said: "South Walney Junior School is open today.

"Although the school closed on yesterday morning - the situation was dealt with extremely quickly by the school."

A local water group and electrician were called to the site yesterday morning, in order to make the main access point safe again for the children and staff members.

To keep concerned parents and guardians updated, the school released regular statements throughout the day via Parentmail.

Cumbria County Council also confirmed the school had been closed because of safety concerns due to flooding, and that repairs were carried out, assuring parents everything was to be done to reopen the premises.
