BUSINESS was booming for ice cream sellers as temperatures soared over the Easter Weekend.

Droves of people packed onto the area's beaches to enjoy the searing heat.

Roy’s Ice Cream Van and The Chill and Grill Ice Cream Parlour based at Bardsea on the Coast Road were two of the most popular spots with people visiting the area to enjoy their very own slice of sun, sea and sand.

Bethany Willis and her family were among the dozens taking in the 20-plus degree heat yesterday.

Mrs Willis, who had travelled up from Birmingham, said: “It is such a glorious day and we are all thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

“We have all had our ice creams - you just have to get one when the weather is like this.”

It was also a busy few days for the fire service as they attended a reported 12 fires across Cumbria with three taking place across Barrow, Walney and Haverigg.

All the fires across these areas were in the open.

At 4pm on Sunday one fire engine from Barrow was called to a fire in the open near Rampside Road.

Firefighters said on arrival crews found approximately 200 square metres of grass and gorse well alight.

Crews used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire and were there for around 30 minutes.

There was also another fire at a Holiday Park in Haverigg.

At 8pm on Friday one fire engine from Millom attended a fire in the open at Butterflowers Holiday Park.

On arrival crews discovered a grass fire approximately 20 square metres in size.

Crews used water back packs and beaters to put it out and were there for around 50 minutes.

There was also another open fire at Earnse Bay, Walney, on Friday near to 7pm.

Crews extinguished the fire using three beaters and were there for around one hour.

Temperatures are expected to begin to drop throughout the week with thundery showers predicted for Wednesday in Barrow before light rain showers and around 11 degrees heading into next weekend.
