VANDALS have targeted a boxing gym in Barrow for the third time.

Furness Catholic Amateur Boxing Club blamed "mindless individuals" on damage to caused to a window of the gym.

The under-threat club is currently trying to raise £75,000 to buy the building it sits in, Lyceum Hall in Dalkeith Street.

After more than 60 years producing some of the area’s finest boxers the club is now in jeopardy after the owner of the building put the premises on the market.

The club said it was the third time vandals had targeted the building and work was being done to repair the window.

Writing on social media, the club said: "Unfortunately, and I will add, again, some mindless individuals have caused damage to our gym last night.

"Sadly there is a little pattern forming.

"Clean up and board up as we speak, it’s really nice to sweep broken glass up so that our members can train in a safe environment... again."

The town has rallied to support the boxing club, with an online donation page set up a month ago topping £6,000.

The club raised £2,502 in the first nine days.

I was founded by the late Pat Ryan and is run by his sons Michael and Gary and another generation, Paul, on a voluntary basis, while holding full time employment.

Pat’s late sons Kevin Ryan, North West Boxing Region president and referee, along with Sean Ryan were a both said to be a major influence on the club over the years.

Among the club's backers were the famous boxing ring announcer Michael Buffer, known for his trademark catchphrase "Let's get ready to rumble."

To show his support he said in a tweet: “Nice to see sons Gary and Michael along with second generation Paul, carrying on the tradition of Dad, Pat Ryan (and his late son’s, Kevin & Sean) #LetsGetReadyToRumble and get behind the funding page to keep this gym going for years to come.”
