MORE than 1,400 people are seeking help to sort out their finances from the Barrow and District Credit Union.

The credit union reported solid growth to a packed room of members, staff and volunteers at its AGM.

Hosted by St Mark’s Church, the Barrow and District Credit Union reported on progress through the year and plans for the future.

Speaking after the AGM, Simon Fell, chair of the Barrow and District Credit Union said: “This has been a year of solid progress for the Barrow and District Credit Union.

“I’m glad to report that, thanks to the hard work of our staff, volunteers and board, we are now within touching distance of sustainability.

"We currently serve over 1,400 members - a 12 per cent increase on last year - helping them save, borrow responsibly, and providing a local and ethical option for people who might otherwise turn to loan sharks or payday lenders.

“Last year we ran a successful Stop Loan Sharks campaign, recruiting over 80 new members, and focussed on strengthening our organisation. Next year, we plan to achieve sustainability and offer a range of new products for our members, including online account management.

“I would like to thank our members, staff, volunteers, and Barrow Council, for all of their hard work and support in getting us this far.

"We have achieved so much in five short years and have a bright future.”
