HOMEOWNERS on a Barrow estate said they want their area to feel like a community again.

Dozens of locals met with representatives from Barrow Council, Barrow Police and Cumbria County Council for a meeting to identify how to improve the area.

People were able to submit comment cards, highlighting any problems or positive comments about the area, as well as writing down what they wanted to see brought to Ormsgill.

The overriding message from attendees was that they wanted to see a return of a community feel to the area.

There were calls for a new community centre to be run by local people which will be open to the public to use for community groups or simply to meet for a chat.

There was also  support for a community hub in the area, where facilities are centralised and offers direct contact to police and other services, similar to what has recently opened in Egerton Court, Barrow Island.

The meeting was held at the Sure Start Community Centre and led by Mayor of Barrow and Ormsgill councillor Bill McEwan.

Speaking at the event, Cllr McEwan said: “We want to hear what people in the area have to say and make sure the right people are told to act on their requests.

“This is a partnership effort with Cumbria County Council, the police, the borough council and of course the people of Ormsgill."

He added :"After all, we all want the best for the area and are all working towards the same goal.”
