The winners of the FIRST Lego League have been announced.

Team Asteroids from St Bernards High School and the team from Croftlands Junior School will both represent Cumbria at the national final in Bristol.

Simon Cross, Year five/six teacher at Croftlands Junior School, said: “The children were so shocked when they first found out but they’re so excited now.

“They worked so hard but it’s difficult to gauge how things have gone until the day of the competition.

“They’re really excited for the final and have already been working to improve the robot.”

Natalie Managh, Lego coach at St Bernards Catholic High School, said, "The children are over the moon about winning, they were comparing it to Christmas.

"They've already been back in school working on the robot and are rearing to go for the national final."

Fran Ward, Co-Director for C-Stem, who organised the Lego League in Furness, said: “I’d like to thank the teachers and support staff from all the schools, without them, this competition wouldn’t be the success it has become.

"A big thank you to Furness College who do an amazing job of accommodating such a huge number of pupils & making everyone feel welcome.

“Finally to the participating business’ who have released our STEM Ambassadors to judge and mentor schools, their work is invaluable.

“All of these elements will go towards hopefully securing a World Championship team from Furness to compete in the USA in the near future.

“Congratulations to both Croftlands and St Bernards who were our overall winners this year.

“I am proud of both teams achievements so far and excited to see how they progress at the national finals where they will be representing Cumbria against the rest of the UK and Ireland.”
