Parking patrols are set to begin outside schools in Barrow.

Barrow Police have announced a joint initiative with Highways Agency staff in which they will be conducting parking patrols at schools in the area.

A number of residents have expressed concern over parents parking outside schools, describing it as a potential safety hazard.

One resident said: “The problem is getting parents to park safely when dropping kids off at school.

“Jarrow street a real issue, parking right on junction.”

Another resident highlighted Rating Lane, in Newbarns as an area of concern.

She said: “Parking on Rating Lane is horrendous and always has been. It’s difficult to find a safe place to park and a lot of parents park up over 30 minutes before drop off/pick up.

“Due to lack of space you see parents just stop in the middle of the road to drop their kids off and the amount of times you see people park across the crossing is unreal.”

One Dalton resident called for the same measures to be introduced there.

Another resident said "Parents think its ok to park for 10 min but rules are there for a reason to protect children and members of the public.

"They would not have put rules in place in front of school if they did not have to to keep everyone safe."

Marie Derbyshire, Councillor for the Newbarns ward expressed sympathy to those affected.

She said: "I understand people's complaints about parking because it can be terrible around areas like Rating Lane.

"I know parents sometimes feel parking close to schools is necessary for the safety of their children.

"But I don't see why some children can't walk to school or car share, this would certainly release the pressure."

Patrols will begin on January 14.

A spokesperson for Barrow Police said: “This is an ongoing problem identified right across the borough.

"Joint parking patrols with Highways Agency staff will be starting at schools in our area as of Monday 14th January.”
