A YOUNG superstar has won a prestigious writing award inspired by the football team stranded in a cave in Thailand.

Ten-year-old Harry Mayou, from Ulverston, entered the Jacqueline Wilson Creative Writing Prize 2018 competition after coming up with the idea in his bedroom.

The 1000-word story, called A Fantastic Tail, has been labelled as highly original, imaginative and extremely well-written.

The year six pupil, who attends Lindal and Marton Primary School, will receive a bundle of prizes including Jacqueline Wilson books for his school, £100 work of WHSmith vouchers and a year’s subscription to First News.

Harry's work will also published in an exclusive WHSmith edition of the paperback of My Mum Tracy Beaker, out on February 21.

To top it off, he will get the chance to meet his idol and the little writing sensation said he can’t wait.

On winning the competition, Harry said: “I am very excited to meet Jacqueline Wilson because I want to be an author and she is my favourite.

“I didn’t think I was going to win the competition, so I can’t believe I have.

“The inspiration behind my story comes from the football team of boys getting stuck in the cave.

“I’m not sure where I get my ideas from, they just come into my head and I write about them.”

Sam Proctor, who has taught Harry for four years, said the school could not be prouder of his achievement.

Mr Proctor said: “The prize speaks for itself really. The number of applicants this competition gets is staggering and for Harry to come out on top is incredible.

“Harry has a unique style and when you read the story you know it’s him.

“He has a wonderful talent and he is so dedicated to his learning.

“The whole school, his friends and family are chuffed for him and it gives me a sense of great pride.”

Head teacher Fiona Doran said the school was in awe to have a published author on their roll.

She said: “Harry is an amazing pupil and in all my years of teaching, he has stood out.

“We strive for our children to be ambitious and motivated in order to achieve success, and Harry is a perfect example.

“He has made us all extremely proud.”
