GRANGE residents have done their bit for the community after successfully installing a handrail on a steep footpath.

After Cumbria County Council said they were unable to help with the project as it did not cover the area Grange Civic Society took it upon themselves to apply for grants and find support from elsewhere.

The project started because a number of residents said that the slope of the footpath, leading to the Health Centre and SLDC car park from Kents Banks road, was so steep it posed a risk of failing to their less mobile residents and visitors, especially in bad weather.

Town Councillor and committee member Tricia Thomas said many suggested that a handrail could be put up as a way to make it easier for those using the path.

"In winter, in particular, this path is difficult especially as it is steep and sometimes slippery. So the society agreed to look into the possibility of finding grants and implement the project themselves." she said.

Mrs Thomas also said it was thanks to the civic society, Grange lions, Councillor Eric Morell and Dave Khan who gave donations towards the project that they were able to install the railing.

"Having already received a quote from Tony Saunders, a local blacksmith, for doing the work we decided to go ahead with the project," she said. "And it's thanks to everyone who donated and supported us with this project."
