Residents from Askam who raised concern over visible smoke near the wind farms have been told it was controlled burning.
Ulverston Fire Station received a call shortly after 1pm about a fire in the Foxfields area of the town.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered it was controlled burning taking place, authorised by North West Fire Control.
A spokesman for Ulverston Fire Station said: "We received a call for a fire in the Kirby Fell area.
"When we arrived it was clear that it was controlled burning taking place.
"We were aware of controlled burning happening in this area, but because the caller was not very specific, we did not know it was for this incident."
