TOWN Councillors from Ulverston are writing to Highways England asking what their safety intention is with their plans to reduce the A590 at Greenodd to a single lane.

Highways England is looking at the benefits of a scheme to reduce the length of the westbound dual carriageway.

Councillors in Ulverston have mixed feelings towards the proposed plan, and have agreed to ask Highways England to meet on site to discuss their intentions.

Ulverston Mayor Dave Webster said councillors do not believe the plans will benefit the town.

He said: "We want to have a site meeting with Highways England to see what their plans are with the A590 at Greenodd.

"We believe the proposed plans will not do the town or the A590 any good.

"This could be a danger to pedestrians and drivers because they will be travelling at a high speed from the dual carriageway before."

"We will send a letter to Highways England to see if they are willing to meet at the site to discuss their plans."

Ulverston Town Councillor Mark Wilson said there is concern about the safety intention Highways England have.

He said: "Some people have mixed feeling that it is going to disrupt the town and become a problem.

"Other people think Highways England know what they are doing because they are road engineers.

"My ambition for the whole stretch of the A590 is for it to be better managed and be safer.

"It is a chance for them to explain for them to explain to us why it would be a good thing to have a single lane."

A spokesman from Highways England said: “The existing lane reduction markings will be extended by approximately 500m eastwards.

"This will reduce the hazard for right turning vehicles at the junction and allowing for a standard deceleration lane to be configured within the carriageway hatching.”
