COUNCIL bosses said they found no defect on benches at a popular walking spot where a pensioner sustained a serious leg injury.

Jimmy Armstrong sustained a severe cut to his lower leg after being blinded by the sun and riding his mobility scooter into one of the park benches on Channelside.

Keith Johnson, assistant director of community services at Barrow Borough Council, said council staff visited the site yesterday morning.

“After seeing what had happened, officers from the council attended the scene first thing Monday morning," he said.

“After hearing about the incident over social media, we needed to make sure that there was no defect present on any of the benches.

“They examined the benches for any defects or damage which may cause harm to the public and found nothing that could cause injury, unless it was under exceptional circumstances.

“The council will not be altering the benches because we don’t see any danger to the public.

“Fingers crossed that Mr Armstrong makes a speedy recovery.”

Luckily several strangers came to Mr Armstrong’s aid, with one man removing his shirt to help stop the bleeding.

Shortly after Mr Armstrong was taken to Furness General Hospital by an ambulance crew for treatment.

Due to the size and severity of his wound he believes he could have lost his limb or bled to death had it not been for the help of passersby.

When told the council would not be taking any action with the benches, Mr Armstrong told The Mail: “There won’t be any damage to the bench but there’s been damage done to my leg.

“They say that there isn’t a fault with the bench but I’ve seen how sharp the edges are.

“I dread to think if this happened to a kid, what would the council say then?

“They need to get them changed before someone else gets hurt.”
