A SUPER soapbox challenge could be coming to Barrow town centre in 2019.

Members of Barrow's soapboxing mission are trying to find the perfect components for making it a huge success along our town streets in time for next year.

The group organising the challenge visited the Micklegate Run Soapbox Challenge event in York on bank holiday Monday to gather ideas.

Colin Garnett, Manager of the Barrow BID, said: "We wanted to see how the Soapbox Challenge might work in Barrow town centre and find out what economic impact it could have on the town.

"The challenge brings in fantastic footfall to York and a street that was dying off. The area did have economical problems but the soapbox challenge is now one of the biggest events in the city centre.

"Barrow BID are looking to run a soapbox challenge in the summer of 2019 and The Mail will be the first to know the details about the event, once it has been established."

A soapbox is a motorless vehicle which is raced on a road downhill either against other competitors or against the clock. Pushed at the top allowing an increase in speed, the vehicles can reach speeds of up to 101 miles per hour.

Speaking previously when the plans were in the early stages, Simon Craig, chair of the Barrow BID said: "We think this could be a really good event that will bring communities together. It's for the young and for the old, and we think Dalton Road is an ideal location.

"We are hoping for pub teams, shop teams, football teams and school groups to take part."

It's expected that the ramp used to propel the soapboxes will be placed outside Home Bargains in town. From this starting point, racers would drive down past the statue and towards Marks and Spencer.

The sport gained more recognition in 2000 when Red Bull organised the Red Bull Soapbox Race annual event. for amateur drivers using homemade vehicles. Since then, over 100 of these races have been held in countries across the world. Vehicle designs have imitated pianos, giant babies, a rodeo clown and a controversial corn on the cob.

Now's the time to get thinking of what vegetable inspired model will be next, ready for Barrow Soapbox Challenge 2019!
