A CUMBRIA man has been jailed for more than a decade for rape.

Jonathan Corry, 24, of Longlands Road, Carlisle, was sentenced today at Carlisle Crown Court.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for rape and a further eight months for witness intimidation.

He is also subject to sex offender notification requirements and indefinite restraining orders against the woman he raped and the witness he intimidated.

The rape occurred in the Chinese Gardens at the entrance to Carlisle's Rickerby Park in the early hours of August 12.

The victim, a 26-year-old woman from Carlisle, was on a night out in the city centre when she met Corry in Lloyds Bar in Botchergate at approximately 11.30pm.

They then went to another bar before walking towards Stanwix.

When walking over Eden Bridge, Corry went into the Chinese Gardens.

The woman followed him into the gardens before Corry attacked and raped her.

Following the rape, Corry threatened his victim if she were to tell anyone of what had happened.

The victim went to a friend’s house and disclosed what had happened.

Her friend then drove her to Durranhill Police Station and an investigation was launched.

Corry was arrested later that day and charged following questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Doug Marshall said: "The victim is still dealing with the trauma caused by this terrible attack and receives support from her family and victim support organisations.

"She has been extremely brave throughout the whole process and hopefully the sentence imposed will help her recovery.

"Corry pleaded not guilty and has shown no remorse for his actions.

"Rape and sexual offences have a huge impact on victims and their families.

"We will not stop in our drive to bring offenders to justice and hopefully this outcome will help to encourage victims of serious sexual offences to have the confidence to come forward and report it."
