HIGHWAYS bosses are set to carry out significant trimming on two prominent trees in Barrow.

The two elm trees, one outside The Mail's offices and the other close to the dental surgery near to Ramsden Square roundabout, will be chopped back to give 5.5 metres of clearance above the pavement.

Highways bosses from Cumbria County Council have submitted a planning application to Barrow Borough Council to remove "trunk growth and crown raise" over the highway.

Crown raising involves the removal of the lower branches of the tree to lift the height of the crown.

The trimming must be approved by the local authority as the trees are both subject to tree preservation orders.

A TPO is made to protect specific trees or a particular area, group or woodland from deliberate damage and destruction. TPOs can prevent the felling, lopping, topping, uprooting or otherwise willful damaging of trees.
