A PRIMARY school is celebrating after receiving a prestigious award from Unicef.
Church Walk C.E. Primary School in Ulverston was awarded the international children charity's Gold Award, part of Unicef UK's Rights Respecting School programme.
The Rights Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school.
Gold is the highest accolade given by Unicef UK and shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s rights at all levels of school life. There are more than 400 schools across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales that have received Gold, but Church Walk is one of only three schools in Cumbria.
Headteacher Susan Davies said: “We are very proud to receive the Gold Award from Unicef UK.
"Everyone has worked extremely hard over the last few years. As a result, the award has had a positive impact on relationships within school, we have been able to forge greater links with the local
community and the children have developed a stronger awareness of the wider world."
The Award recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child "at the heart" of a school’s planning, policies and practice.
A Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.
