CULTURAL campaigners and organisers of an annual activity weekend Fun Palaces will be coming to South Cumbria later this year.

The first-ever weekend-long event will take place in Dalton on Saturday October 7 and Sunday 8, and will include all manner of arts, science, craft, tech, digital and sports events and activities.

Dalton Creatives, who are bringing Fun Palaces to Furness, are looking to the community for help; anyone who would like to share a skill or some knowledge, or simply volunteer to help out, is being asked to contact the organisers.

Dalton Creatives director Shaun Blezard says: "We believe in the Fun Palaces motto of ‘everyone an artist, everyone a scientist’, so couldn’t resist not getting involved in the weekend.

"We hope to fill the Community Centre with all sorts of fun family activities that will be fun, but also maybe give you some skills and knowledge you didn’t have before arriving.”

On Saturday 7, the Nelson Street community centre will host fun arts and science activities for all the family, with Leonard Cheshire Youthability confirmed to attend, with some more announcements soon.

Shaun continues: "If anyone has something arts or science-based that they would like to share, then please contact us. This could be teaching people to face paint, make balloon animals, a demonstration of some science, do something crafty."

The following day is a "repair and recycle" day, while Sound Interventions will be in attendance, showing off their Sound Mirrors. Again, the search is on for people who can fix things, or can demonstrate some interesting things to do with recycling.

"Maybe you can sew and can show people some simple ways to repair clothes? Or you can fix small electrical goods? Make sculptures from rubbish?" says Shaun.

“It really has the makings of a wonderful weekend of family fun. We just need our community to step up and join us.

"The whole weekend is free and is about us all getting together and sharing our skills and time together.”
