A COLLECTION of autobiographical poems by Robert Louis Stevenson features in an internationally-travelled folk performance heading to South Cumbria.
The latest Furness Tradition show, taking place at the Coronation Hall on Wednesday October 4, will be Sing me a Song! - the touring performance by Australian-based musicians Neil Adam and Judy Turner.
After many years playing the folk music circuit both as a duo, in bands and for the last 15 years with The Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club, Neil and Judy are putting time again into acoustic musical events and festival appearances together.
This, their most recent project, the culmination of a long time passion for Robert Louis Stevenson’s writing, involves them in constructing a show based on his poetry, put to music.
Some of the songs have been recorded on CDs and have seen many live performances, others are entirely new.
In the show, they are juxtaposed with extracts from Stevenson’s writing - including letters and diaries - and beautiful contemporary photographs, mostly taken by his family, of the fascinating life of one of Scotland’s greatest writers of the 19th Century.
The combination of beautiful music and the obvious genuine affection of this husband and wife team for another makes for a heart warming, interesting and engaging event.
Judy Turner (fiddle, viola, and narration) and Neil Adam (guitar and vocals) are stalwarts of the Australian and UK folk scenes, showcasing Scottish and Australian traditional as well as their own material.
Set to original music and recorded with various string ensembles, this is the soundtrack to a stage show based on his extraordinary life, which has toured successfully in Australia and overseas.
The show in Ulverston on Wednesday 4 starts at 8pm, and tickets are available from the Coronation hall box office.
