WE go back 60 years for this picture of a successful Dalton Cricket Club team – winners of the Higson Cup.
It was kindly sent in by Colin Pickthall, of Fountain Street, Ulverston. Standing, from left, is Frank Thurman, "Big" Billy Procter, Dennis Burns, Dennis Noall, Gordon Gibson, possibly Ken Fisher, Jack Sharp and Billy Davies (scorer).
Sitting, from left, is Joe Raven (ground captain), Joe Waite, Fred Gibson, Ronnie Polkinghorn, John Gibson, John "Totsie" Tomlinson and Les Penalurick.
Mr Pickthall came across the picture in his late father’s collection of archive material.
He said: “This was a great side, with some wonderful characters. “My favourite was Ronnie Polkinghorn who was an astonishingly clever bowler and a quiet, modest man.
“Playing for the “A” team at West Coast Tannery, he hit 111 in very rapid time.
“As he came out he said, ‘Sorry lads, I should have got more, but I wasn’t seeing the ball’.
“I was scoring and utterly amazed.”
