WITH just one known exception, the South Cumbrian men of the 1/4th Battalion of the King’s Own to be killed on August 8 in 2016 have no known graves and are named on the Thiepval Memorial to the “missing” of the Battle of the Somme.

They have been listed here by the community most associated with the soldier.

BARROW:

Pte James Craig, No. 200492. The 19-year-old was the only son of Alexander and Jane Ellen Craig, of 56 Powerful Street, Barrow.

Cpl Stanley Richardson, No. 2194. The 21-year-old was the son of Mr J. T and Mrs S. L. Richardson, of 8 Delhi Street, Vickerstown, Walney.

CONISTON:

Cpl Benjamin Atkinson Kirkby, No. 201062. He had been a slate quarry worker and had lived at Langdale and Coniston before his parents moved to Millom.

L/Cpl Solomon Robinson, No 3583, was aged 33 and was the son the late John and Margaret Robinson, of Field House, Coniston.

Company Quartermaster Sgt Richard Usher, No. 2410. The 23-year-old was the son of John and Jane Usher, of 191 Albert Street, Millom.

DALTON:

Pte John Edward Gill, No. 1524, was in charge of a Lewis light machine gun. His parents lived at 24 Chapel Street, Dalton.

Pte Edward Nicholson, No. 809. The 29-year-old was the son of Benjamin and Sarah A. Nicholson, of 6 Fell Croft, Dalton.

Pte William Henry Nicholson, No. 200655. The 18-year-old was the son of Benjamin and Sarah A. Nicholson, of 6 Fell Croft, Dalton.

HAVERTHWAITE:

Pte William Henry Rawsthorne, No. 3655. The 21-year-old was the son of William A. and Margaret A. Rawthorne, of Haverthwaite.

LINDAL:

Pte Benjamin Crispe, No. 2145. The 21-year-old was the son of W.B. and Alice Crispe, of 13 London Road, Lindal.

MILLOM: Pte Richard Penaluna, No. 2919. The 26-year-old was the son of Richard and Hannabell Penaluna, of 44 King Street, Millom

ULVERSTON: Pte Nelson Athersmith, No. 201099. The 19-year-old was the brother of Mrs F. G. Brown, of the Welcome Inn, Quay Street, Ulverston. He worked for Ulverston newsagent Fred Dickinson.

Cpl George Bell, No. 200273. The 19-year-old was the son of James William and Jessie Bell, of 16 Kennedy Street, Ulverston.

L/Cpl John Cloudsdale, No. 1829. The 24-year-old was the son of Richard Cloudsdale, of 8 Oubas Hill, Ulverston.

Pte Thomas Cloudsdale, No. 2469. The 27-year-old was the son of Richard Cloudsdale, of 8 Oubas Hill, Ulverston, and the brother of John.

Pte James Downham, No. 201126. The 22-year-old was the son of William and Fanny Downham, of 19 Hill Fall, Ulverston.

Cpl Charles Norman Lewis, No. 1797. The 22-year-old was the son of John Winder Lewis, of 9 Fountain Street, Ulverston.

Pte James Whiteway, No. 3640. The 19-year-old was the son of Mrs C. Whiteway, of 31 Casson Street, Ulverston.

Pte Thomas Wilkinson, No. 200036. The 22-year-old was the son of Frances Wilkinson, of 18 the Ellers, Ulverston and the late John Henry Wilkinson.

THE EXCEPTION

The one soldier who body was recovered and identified from the fighting of August 8 was Pte J, Barrow, No. 200759, aged 25. He is buried at Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont. Pte Barrow was the son of the late Isaac and Margaret Barrow. He was a former pupil at Ulverston Victoria Grammar School and a student at St John’s College, York. He was an assistant master at Dalton Church of England School.
