A Walney girl became the first in Cumbria to receive the Chief Scout Award in 1994.

Girls had only been allowed to join the Scouts two years previously and Debbie Wassall was one of the first.

Also in 1994 The Mail reported that Scouts in St Petersburg, Russia, would soon be equipped for hikes thanks to Duddon and High Furness Scouts.

The Scouts had raised money to equip a Scout box, filled with compasses, a camping stove, lantern and cooking utensils.

Then the Rotary Club of Ulverston matched their efforts, donating a second box of goods.

District Commissioner Julie Samson explained: "Scouting in the United Kingdom joined forces with the Rotary Club of Greta Britain to provide boxes of basic equipment.

"Our boxes went over last weekend with a district executive member from Leicestershire, straight to St Petersburg. Since the demise of communism in Russia, Scouting in Russia has got under way again but they are unable to buy basic Scouting equipment."

In 1994 five Furness members of the Scouts were involved in a presentation.

Ken Tucker (3rd Duddon Scouts, Askam), Bryan Caine (2nd Ulverston) and David Reynolds (1st Urswick and Adlindham) were presented with long service awards.

Roger Tucker (1st Ulverston) and Assistant District Commissioner Keith Morris were presented with new Leader warrants.

The same year Barrow Baptist Scout Group held Christmas in the middle of August as part of their summer experience camp. On their 'Christmas Eve' they put up decorations and a tree and the next day a treasure hunt in search of Santa ended in a massive present opening.

Then there was a Christmas dinner of turkey and all the trimmings.

Scout leader Chris Kennedy said the boys had wondered what camping around Christmas would be like with warm weather.
