YOU didn’t need to win the lottery to live happily ever after – you just needed to inherit a cat and attract the attention of a good fairy.

At least that’s how Ulverston Royal British Legion Pantomime Society saw it at the Coronation Hall as they presented Puss in Boots in 1996, reported the Mail at the time.

An experienced team of regular pantomimers acted out the legend of the cat that could talk, wear boots and transform its master from a poor orphaned miller’s son into the Marquis of Carabas.

Denise King played the extremely useful cat and Lindsay Jackson was Stephen, the miller’s son, who falls in love way above his station after meeting Princess Angelina (Tracy Jackson) while out for a country walk.

Slapstick, a spectacular giant, dancing girls and a rather gifted cow added up to a night of traditional family fun for all the family, said The Mail.

Also in the cast were Bob Needham, Richard Rowlatt, Terry Leech, Elaine Parkinson, Ken Hindle, Sue Little, Carole Leech, Stuart Walden and David Mossop, with a chorus of singers and dancers.

“The leading man is a woman, his mother is a man and his best friend is a goose - it must be pantomime time again.”

So said The Mail in 1997 as the Ulverston Royal British Legion Pantomime Society presented Mother Goose at the Coronation Hall.

Lindsay Jackson played Colin, son of Mother Goose, who was played by well-known pantomime dame Ken Hindle, while Rebecca Burch played the Goose.Tracey Jackson was the leading lady, Jill, daughter of Sir Jasper Moneybags, who was played by Richard Rowlatt.

Martin Craig and Sue Little played the comedy duo of Hayseed and Mangleworzel and Bob Needham was Silly Billy.

The show was directed by Elaine Parkinson.

Audiences roared with applause as the curtain fall in appreciation for the outstanding show and the dedication of the cast.

The humour and light hearted tone of the show were singled out for praise and many were keen to follow the drama company to their next show.
