OVER the years, The Mail has reported on many happy endings involving our four-legged friends.

Whether finding strays a new home or dogs reunited with long lost owners, the tales have always been popular with our readers.

We delved back into our archives to find some particularly heart-warming accounts.

One which sticks out is the story of Chrissy, or Ben as he was formerly known, who became the happiest dog in the world at Christmas in 1996.

The stray dog was taken in by Lesley Casson, 27, and her husband Sean of Barrow.

The couple adopted Chrissy from Joanna Braithwaite who was part of the rescue team in her role as co-ordinator for Petsearch.

Joanna said: “He was absolutely starving when we got him on Boxing Day. We brought him back and he was very nervous.

“He went straight into the kitchen to where our turkey was and just sat below it, looking up and whimpering.

“It was his first turkey dinner.”

The dog very quickly warmed to the family and responded well to their love and warmth.

Chrissy became part of the family and was surrounded by love and kindness.

Another tale to spread joy was when two young children were reunited with their lost puppy in 1997.

Honey had gone missing from their home in Barrow and ended up being found nearly two miles away.

The family searched high and low for their four-legged friend and never gave up until he was found.

The kids were overjoyed when they saw their pet returned to them.

Steven Beck, 4, and his sister Laura, 2, of Parkhouse Farm lost their dog when she wriggled free from the lead.

Mrs Beck said: “The kids are over the moon.

“We’ll be keeping a closer eye on Honey next time.”

In that same year, another dog went missing after fireworks on New Year’s Eve frightened him away, but his owners were overjoyed when they were reunited.

Tigra went missing from owners Chris Bawden, 21, and his girlfriend. After putting out appeals and posters, Tigra was returned to them after being spotted near Askam.

Fireworks have been known to frighten pets on bonfire night, and owners have often criticised large displays that can cause anxiety in pets.
