TEENAGERS at a South Cumbrian school knew all the latest fashion trends back in 1996 as they worked on their collections of outfits for a textile and design course.

The Mail, on Friday, December 6 in 1996 looked at what students at Ulverston Victoria High School considered the essential things needed to impress on the catwalk.

The article noted: “The most committed of fashion students are finding their own fake furs and low-slung hipsters to chase the 1960s style they say is well and truly back.

“The trend has seen the most fashionable people just as likely to be scouting charity shops as clothes racks in high street shops.

“Two of the textile students say the trick for the most up-to-date in style is to borrow ideas from all eras of evolving British fashion.

“Sixth former Rachel Barnes says most of her own day and night-time outfits come from charity shops.

“Yet her favourite style stretches way back to the past thanks to fashion designer Vivienne Westwood and her Victorian-style dresses."

The Mail, on February 12 in 1994, noted: “Pupils from Ulverston Victoria High School have been quizzing people on their reaction to the town’s controversial one-way system.

“The survey, on behalf of The Mail, was commissioned to gauge reaction to the system introduced by Cumbria County Council’s highways department.

"An 800-signature petition opposing the scheme has already been handed to the county’s highways sub-committee.”

Tony Blair won the May 1997 General Election for Labour and  Daniel Grant, a candidate in a mock election at UVHS, performed just as well.

The Mail, on May 1, noted: “Labour polled 361 votes and edged the Liberal Democrat candidate, Steph Govenden, into second with a majority of 23. Young voters didn’t give much support to the Conservative Party candidate, Paul Bowes, who ended more than 200 votes behind Labour and the Lib Dems. Trailing in fourth was Jodie White, candidate for the Liberty, Equality, Fraternity and Truth Party.”
