AS the country celebrated the start of a new millennium 20 years ago youngsters from two schools in Furness were invited to London to perform music and drama in front  of thousands of people at the Millennium Dome.

The Mail, on Tuesday, March 7 in 2000, noted that pupils from St Bernard’s Catholic High School, Barrow, and Dowdales School in Dalton were taking part in a series of special performances with hundreds of other Cumbrian youngsters in a drama about life in the county.

The Barrow and Dalton pupils had worked with Dennis Toye. and Bernard’s teacher Sue O’Connor.

She said: “The group will be fitting in with a video about Cumbria and we have the slot on Barrow so we will be doing something on the shipyard.”

Some the Dalton youngsters featured in a ceilidh band and performed clog dancing routines.

A public test performance for the county contribution t the London show was staged at the Theatre on the Lake at Keswick.
