THE royal seal of approval was given to South Cumbria craft products back in 2002 when the Duchess of Gloucester toured the Lakes Glass Centre.

During her Ulverston visited, she told Heron Glass director John Thistlethwaite that she collected Ulverston glass mushrooms and perfume bottles - often bought as presents by her husband.

She was presented with bouquet of flowers by Mr Thistlethwaite’s five-year-old daughter Amy.

The Mail, on Thursday, May 16, noted: “The duchess was given a glass-making demonstration during her tour of Heron Glass by Gary Strong and was presented with a glass blue swan to commemorate her visit.

“She was later taken around Cumbria Crystal where she was also given a demonstration.”

Cumbria Crystal director Ian Dillon said: “She was a very charming lady.

“She was absolutely fascinated by the making of a claret jug.”

The duchess chatted with people in the glassworks shop before going to the restaurant for lunch.
