10 YEARS AGO Grizedale Arts opened its new base at Lawson Park, near Coniston. The project to convert a farmhouse had cost £1.3m. Approval was given for a new entrance canopy at the World of Beatrix Potter attraction at the Old Laundry Building in Bowness. A detached house at Stoneham Close, Barrow, was offered for sale at £239,950. A semi-detached house at Summit Avenue, Barrow, was£215,000. Former player Alan Stutchbury was presented with the person-of-the-year award from Furness Rugby Union Club or services to the club.He had moved to Australia and was a director at top Sydney club Randwick.
25 YEARS AGO Dalton councillors backed calls for a plaque in memory of a town pigeon called Tommy who won the animal VC for bravery to carrying a military message from Holland during the Second World War. Slate from the Kirkby-based Burlington firm was used to cover the roof of the newly-restored Saint Pancras railway station and the Grand Midland Hotel, London. Presenter Jill Dando, from the BBC’s Holiday programme,had been staying with a TV crew at Cartmel while filming in the Lake District.
50 YEARS AGO You would get 2p change from £2 for a 3ft divan bed at branches of Stollers in Barrow, Ulverston and Millom. Thirteen members of the Barrow and District Industrial Accident Prevention Group went on a guided tour of Barrow Steelworks.
