A SELFLESS woman from Ulverston who gives up her time to make sure vulnerable people are well fed has been rewarded with the Evening Mail's Bouquet of the Week.

Josephine Cain volunteers for Barrow Community Kitchen which every Sunday offers a three-course meal to people who may be feeling isolated, had their benefits sanctioned or are struggling to pay household bills at St Matthews Community Halls in Highfield Road, Barrow.

She decided to volunteer for the team after hearing and then seeing for herself the amazing work they do.

Evening Mail Bouquet of the Week winner Josephine Cain. Ms Cain was surprised by the Bouquet of the Week on Sunday after members of the team nominated her for the Evening Mail accolade for her commitment and enthusiasm.

Ms Cain, who has two children, said the nomination came as a complete surprise and was overwhelmed by the consideration.

Speaking after receiving the flowers, she said: "I was a big surprise. I've never had anything like that before."

Ms Cain works as a midday supervisor and cleaner at Ulverston Victoria High School but still finds time to be one of the driving forces behind the success at Barrow Community Kitchen.

She said: "I started just before Christmas last year. I really enjoy it.

"I saw it on Facebook and I thought I'd go down with my niece with a few bits and bobs and I've carried on going ever since.

"I just didn't realise that there were that many people sanctioned and short of money.

"We have got quite a lot of people who volunteer. It's a lovely team."

The team at Barrow Community Kitchen source, cook and serve a starter, main course and pudding every week, and members pride themselves on offering a totally inclusive and friendly service for all.
