PUPILS at Ulverston's Victoria High School received their GCSE results on Thursday in what was a morning of nerves, laughter and celebration.

Grades remained high despite new changes taking effect this year which mean English and maths subjects are now marked from grade 1 to 9, instead of using A-U.

Bella Kanjoo Parsons, 16, was another pupil delighted with her results.

The Broughton student achieved the equivalent of eight A*s and two As and said her results were "much better than expected".

Another satisfied student was Eilidh Miller who also achieved eight A*s and two As.

She said :"I really didn't expect these results, I was quite stressed through the exams.

"I would like to go to sixth form and study biology and English literature."

Fiona Gibson, 16, also earned seven A*s and three As and hopes to study chemistry, biology and music from September.
