MEMBERS of the community rallied together for a charity football match in memory of an 11-year-old boy.

Swarthmoor Football Club hosted the match in memory of Ulverston Victoria High School pupil Josh West.

Described as a "fantastic goalie", Josh had a strong reputation as a skilled footballer so friends and family were eager to pay tribute to his talents.

Nicola Lancaster, Josh's mother, said: "He would be loving this today. Football was everything to him. His team were his mates. He was the voice of the team.

"It is quieter now, his voice just travelled across the pitch."

The match is an annual event that will see Josh's team, Swarthmoor Juniors, play against different clubs around the area in an attempt to win the newly-created Joshua's Shield.

This morning marked the inaugural match which saw Swarthmoor Juniors play Ulverston Rangers before the children took on their parents in a special dads and lads match.

Businesses around the area, including Furness Plastics and The Stone Workshop, donated goods to help make the event a success and the family has been extremely touched by the generosity of the community.

Lee West, Josh's dad, is overwhelmed by the support the family has received and grateful for everyone who has helped.

He said: "I would just like to thank everyone who has helped out.

"It was very emotional but a fantastic day and I can't thank everyone enough for their help."

Crowds of people turned out to take part in the day, with some people going the extra mile, such as Josh's cousin, Ross Lancaster, who had his head shaved.

Delighted by the support from the community, Ms Lancaster said: "Josh was such a popular lad. I think half of Ulverston knew him in some way."

Josh died in April this year after suffering an asthma attack at his Ulverston home, just days before his 12th birthday.

Members of the community have rallied around in memory of Josh and have raised around £4,000 for the Joshua Foundation, which is raising funds for Asthma UK and Swarthmoor Football Club.

The club, which played a major part in Josh's life, is raising money for a bench that will be erected on the pitch in his honour.

Tommy Tomsett, chairman of Swarthmoor Junior FootballClub, paid tribute to Josh, saying: "We were all devastated by the loss of Josh. He was such a chirpy, bubbly boy. He was always smiling - he was such a cheeky chappie.

"The whole family are a big part of the club and we wanted to make sure that, as the years go by, he is never forgotten.

"He was a fantastic goalie who lived for football. He was a lovable charmer."
