A YOUNG boy who died after suffering an asthma attack will be remembered for years to come as the Ulverston community makes plans to celebrate his life.

Josh West died in April this year, just days before his 12th birthday, after suffering an asthma attack at his Ulverston home.

The boy's death sparked a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of the condition, a cause that has seen the whole community rally together in support.

As a promising young footballer, Josh's reputation as a goalkeeper spread far and wide around south Cumbria and one club is determined to help make Josh's memory live on.

Lee West, Josh's father, said: "We're having a charity football game on July 23 at Swarthmoor Football Club.

"We've got a shield - the Joshua Shield - that we will play for every year.

"This year we're playing Ulverston Rangers, so there will be a lot of Josh's friends playing."

All the money raised from the match will be put back into the club which is hoping to raise £4,000 for a memorial bench for Josh.

Swarthmoor Football Club remembers Josh as a valuable member of their team.

A statement from the club said: "Joshua loved his football and spent many hours on the pitch and at home practising his goalkeeping skills.

"Joshua's cheeky, warm and loveable character made him a popular member of the club and wider football community and the sound of him encouraging his team to 'mark up' will echo around the pitch for years to come."

Family and friends have set up a JustGiving page, which can be found here.
