TRUMPETS and trombones sounded in the start of the 40th edition of a hugely popular event held in Ulverston today.
The South Cumbria Musical Festival got under way with a brass instrument special seeing talented amateur and professional performers take to the stage at the Coronation Hall.
Solos, duets and bands wowed the audience of music lovers in the opening morning, afternoon and evening sessions.
In the junior classes, Abigail Stanley from Dalton was awarded the Kimberly-Clark Shield and Bursary as a promising young brass competitor, and the Robert J Lacey Memorial Plate was awarded to Holly Clunie from Millom.
Keith Butcher, festival chairman, said adjudicator John Doyle had a tough job deciding the winners of each category due to the high standards on show.
He said "The festival got off to a great start with some exceptional brass playing in the solo classes, particularly from ensemble groups, which is encouraging for the well-being of the brass competition.
"We are looking forward to the rest of the week continuing the same high standard set."
Bands including Barrow Shipyard Junior Band, Dalton Town Band, St Pius School Orchestra and Captain Shaw's Brass Ensemble took part in some of the freestyle categories which accommodate longer performances.
The festival runs until Saturday with various different styles presented on each day such as piano, woodwind, speech, strings and choirs.
It all culminates with a gala performance evening on Saturday at 7.30pm.
Tickets can be obtained from the festival office in the Coronation Hall or by ringing 0777 340 3686.
