A MILLOM woman is preparing to travel across the world and take on Mount Everest in a bid to raise money for a lifesaving charity.

Daisy Clark, from Millom, will be travelling to Nepal later this year to begin a 16-day trek to Mount Everest base camp to encourage more people to become stem cell donors.

The 30-year-old engineer has had the trip in the diary for a number of years but decided to try and raise money after her colleague's son was diagnosed with leukaemia.

She said: "I had the trip booked for about two years but then there was the earthquake in Nepal so it was delayed.

"I got thinking and thought I would see if I could raise a bit of money along the way.

"A friend at work had just found out that his son was diagnosed with leukaemia and when I began to research what it was I thought it would be nice to become a stem cell donor.

"It costs £40 to become a donor but not everyone can afford that so I'm aiming to raise £1,000 which would fund 25 donations."

Miss Clark will be raising money for UK charity, DKMS, to provide the opportunity for people to engage in their lifesaving work.

The charity, which was established in 2013, aims to provide enough blood stem cell donors to support those in need throughout the world.

According to statistics from the charity, one person in UK is diagnosed with blood cancer every 20 minutes.

Startled by these figures, Miss Clark decided to do something to help so tailored her Mount Everest challenge to raise these vital funds.

She said: "It's a lifesaving charity. My colleague's son is just a little boy and I was thinking about this little, tiny person and just thought I could do a little bit to help."

Miss Clark will set out on her quest in October and has spent months training in and around the Lake District to prepare for the challenge.

She said: "I've done quite a bit of travelling and have done small treks but nothing on this scale before.

"I did a lost city trek in Columbia which was really good, but difficult.

"I'm nervous about this one because I know it's going to be hard but I'm excited.

"I just can't wait to get out there and do it."
