Councillors have continued their mission to clean up their beloved beach banks with a second litter pick for the Big Clean 2016 campaign.

Walney South Labour councillors Frank Cassidy, Helen Wall and Colin Thomson led the clean-up of the banking opposite the King Alfred pub on the evening of Friday 5 August.

They had appealed for helpers from their chosen area and were joined by a group of Walney residents. Together they spent and hour-and-a-half collecting litter from the concrete steps which lead down to the beach, and from the trees and bushes. Cllr Cassidy said: “We would like to thank the residents who mucked in alongside us. It was warm work, but we made more progress in giving the patch a good clean-up."

After the first leg of the clean back in May the councillors realised that the area they had selected was in a worse state than they had originally anticipated. Although they mad a good start, they realised that this noble mission may have to be carried out in stages, Cllr Cassidy said: “The steps are just about sorted and we filled quite a few bags with litter – some of it must have been there for years.

“It was a big effort, but some rubbish remains buried in the undergrowth. We have decided to leave it until around November time when the foliage dies back, then we can get in and finish the job.”

The Big Clean 2016 campaign has now been in full swing since March and will continue until October. The Walney South Labour councillors have made a great contribution to helping the residents living in their patch and have truly embraced the spirit of the campaign, spreading the word on social media and bringing in Barrow Borough Council’s Streetcare team to provide shovels, gloves, plastic bags and litter-picking sticks.
