A charitable organisation has held a Big Clean to tidy up a community garden and make their town a more beautiful place to live.

Barrow Timebank conducted a Big Clean of the community garden in Hartington Street, Barrow, on Saturday August 6.

The Timebank was formed in April 2015 with the goal of working with others to help develop their community into a safe, prosperous and supportive place to live and work.

Zoe Hartley, Timebank coordinator, whose base is found at 242-244 Dalton Road, said: "We had a lovely day out on our Big Clean of the gardens. It ended up being a really sunny afternoon and we all had a good laugh.

"It's actually the third time we have done a litter pick of that particular garden and with it being summer it is quite overgrown at the moment.

"We went to Barrow council and asked if there were any areas that were neglected and could do with a bit of attention and that's how we ended up tidying up that particular spot.

"The garden will really benefit from more litter picks as we progress in to winter and we would be really grateful for more volunteers to help us out. The Timebank is a great way to make friends and we hold a members forum every Thursday which is the perfect way to get to know people."

The Timebank volunteers work hard to improve their town and help people with tasks they may be unable to do themselves.

Members list the skills and experience which they can offer and the help that they need, using a questionnaire provided by the Timebank. The idea of saving up time credits has been introduced and is a really clever way to exchange services and make the most of your strengths.

Everyone’s contribution is welcomed and everyone’s skills are valued equally— one hour always equals one time credit.

People agree to both give and receive help, to earn and to spend their time credits and all members are encouraged to spend their time credits to allow others to make a difference and feel needed.

The Timebank currently has 78 members, including organisations such as 13th Barrow Trinity Brownies, The Forum, Park Leisure Centre, Station View, Barrow Library, Love Barrow Alliance and Love Barrow awards.

However, they are still looking to get more people involved. So, whether your skill is cooking, gardening or litter picking you can get in touch with Zoe Hartley on:01229 348027 or email: info@barrowtimebank.uk.
