FURNESS students have been visited by their Dutch pen pals and they have worked together on a First World War Remembrance project.

Pupils from Nehalennia School, in The Netherlands, have been visiting their pen pals at Dowdales School, in Dalton.

The secondary school welcomed 41 Dutch youngsters and three members of staff, including former Dowdales pupil Kerri Isaac, last week.

The Year Nine Dowdales pupils have been pen pals with the visitors for around a year.

This is the third year of the link-up between the two schools.

The bilingual students from Middelburg joined in with English lessons focusing on war poetry and drama ensembles. The visitors particularly enjoyed the drama workshops as this is not something which is on their own school timetables.

The Dowdales students are hoping to embark on a return visit next year.

Anne Dyer, an assistant head at Dowdales School, said the link-up helps their students to broaden their horizons, learn about a different culture and look at different countries that they can visit.

Mrs Dyer said it also inspires them through the confidence of the Dutch students who interact with them using their second language.
