A CONCERNED Barrow resident has called on the council to do more to tackle rubbish down a Barrow town centre alley.

Marcus Herbert, 40, was disgusted after finding piles of rubbish scattered down an alley in between Buccleuch Street and Scott Street in Barrow earlier this morning in what has become a town hotspot for litter.

Just last week, Mr Herbert's mother Barbara told the Evening Mail about two separate incidents of rubbish being littered down the same alley.

The pair have reported all of their encounters to the council with a streetcare team coming to clean up the rubbish but Mr Herbert is fed up that stronger penalties aren't being enforced to deter people from littering.

He said: "I would have thought that the council would fine those are letting their rubbish overflow but they don't seem to give a flying hoot about it.

"I don't think there are enforcing it at all and they don't care about what is going on.

"The council has some quite draconian powers and if they started using them I think it would have an impact on the amount of litter dropped by businesses and people alike.

"I am ashamed to be a Barrovian. It's disgusting, but nobody seems to want do sort out the littler problems in the town centre and the surrounding areas."
