AN inspiring learning coordinator who supports students as they manage exams, coursework and the pressures of study has been recognised with the Evening Mail's Bouquet of the Week.

Karen Turner has worked at Furness College for 14 years and was surprised with the special flowers at work at the Channelside facility in Barrow on Thursday.

Over the years, Mrs Turner has helped students get the most out of their time at Furness College by liaising with pastoral teams and linking with various schools and agencies.

Mrs Turner, who lives in Askam, was nominated for the Bouquet of the Week for the dedication and hours of work she puts in organising fairs and extracurricular activities.

These events help to encourage students to explore the various options of higher education, apprenticeships and employment and show them the advantages of volunteering in the community.

Speaking after being surprised with the flowers on Thursday, the 54-year-old said: "I love my job. It's tiring but I love it.

"I love being able to help the students if they are going through a difficult time.

"The whole department is really supportive of the students and it's really moving forward."

Mrs Turner started working at Furness College in 2002 and moved onto her current role as learning enrichment coordinator in 2006.

Since then she has made a big difference to the progress of students and put together support packages on a case by case basis.

Mrs Turner said: "I do all the things around well-being and support.

"I help if students are having issues at home or at the college which are affecting their learning and I work with the students about what is going on, how we can support them and to refer them to other departments."

Mrs Turner was put forward by her daughter, Hannah, who said she was amazed by the amount of her own time she dedicates to the college.

She said: "She always makes herself available for students who need someone to talk to and this creates a positive relationship between herself and the students."
