A BARROW woman who is battling cancer has been recognised for her bravery with the Evening Mail's Bouquet of the Week.

Christine Berry, 56, of Ainslie Street, Barrow, is seeking specialist treatment after she was diagnosed with bowel cancer and recently found out she had a brain tumour.

Miss Berry's family are fundraising to get enough money to try pioneering treatment, possibly at a clinic in Germany, in the hope it will stop the cancer from spreading or save her life.

Throughout her cancer ordeal, Miss Berry, a mother-of-two, has amazed her family for her positive thinking and was the deserving recipient of the Bouquet of the Week on Thursday November 17.

She was nominated for the accolade by her daughter, Mandy, who said she was inspired by how she had managed to cope in the face of such testing times, as well as family friend, Emily Light.

Speaking about the nomination, Miss Berry, who worked as a carer, said: "It was a big surprise. I had no idea.

"The support has been really good from everyone and friends.

"The oncology unit at FGH have been great."

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Miss Berry and calls on members of the public to donate what they can to reach a target of £50,000.

The former care worker's family have been researching places she could go to, including the Hallwang Clinic, near Stuttgart, which made news last month as the place former Emmerdale actress Leah Bracknell hopes to get lifesaving treatment for lung cancer.

In her nomination for the Bouquet of the Week, Mandy Berry said: "I would like to nominate my mum for being the bravest and strongest person I know.

"She is currently fighting advanced bowel cancer and is having a tough time at the moment."
