THE chairman of an amateur football club is appealing for information after joyriders left the club with hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

Richard John, chairman of Holker Old Boys Football Club, was alarmed to discover that extensive damage had been caused to the concrete walling in the bottom car park.

The incident happened on Thursday evening, just as it was getting dark.

He said: "It happened in the bottom car park. We get joyriders there and have had a bit of a history with them.

"We had someone before who went round a churned the pitch up by driving on it.

"The car park is a little bit gravelly and joyriders go there and spin round when noone's there.

"The other night they just got out of control and haven taken out part of that wall."

A large section of the walling has been destroyed, with part of the car's bumper being left behind.

Mr John says it is likely to cost the club hundreds of pounds to repair the property.

He said: "Each of those slabs are about £10 each and there are about a dozen of those gone.

"At best it's going to cost us £200 in materials and a lot of time that could be spent elsewhere.

"At worst if we have to get someone in we're talking £800 worth of damage.

"It's annoying because we're an amateur club and we rely on sponsors - and we've got some great sponsors - but it's annoying having to waste our money on stuff we don't need to.

"We have enough to do keeping the grounds and building in decent repair without people coming in and doing this like this."

As the nights begin to draw in, Mr John is concerned that this will continue to be an issue and is eager to put a stop to the behaviour.

Having reported the matter to the police, Mr John is now turning his attention to the public.

He said: "Someone somewhere has got a big lump off their car which has had quite a bit of damage to it.

"We've spoken to the police but if anyone has any news it would be great if they get in touch because it's not the first time this has happened."
